In the days following Hurricane Katrina, LP contributed $500,000 to the American Red Cross for immediate relief and committed to donating 1.5 million square feet of oriented strand board (OSB) for rebuilding efforts.

Now, LP is donating an additional 1.2 million square feet of OSB—flooring and sheathing for walls and roofs—bringing the total LP product contribution to 2.7 million square feet. The materials will be used for the core structure of more than 500 affordable homes in the Gulf Coast as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Operation Home Delivery. In total, LP’s contribution, including product and monetary donations, exceeds $1.2 million.
Habitat for Humanity is focused on long-term recovery and rebuilding, serving as a catalyst to coordinate volunteers and donations.
“LP has a strong relationship with Habitat for Humanity and we are grateful for the work being done by this fine organization to get Gulf Coast rebuilding underway,” says Rusty Carroll, LP OSB marketing manager. “As the world’s largest manufacturer of OSB, LP is proud to provide enough product for use in every Habitat home constructed in the Gulf Coast this year, and we are excited about our role in accelerating rebuilding momentum.”
Habitat homeowners will have peace of mind living in houses built with quality LP structural products, and they’ll also experience the long-term benefits and cost savings of increased energy efficiency: LP TechShield® Radiant Barrier roof sheathing will be used in every home. LP TechShield prevents up to 97 percent of the sun’s radiant heat from entering attics, so homes stay cooler and air conditioning units operate more efficiently. Research indicates that LP TechShield can ultimately reduce energy consumption by 20 percent.
Additionally, on Saturday, July 15, a volunteer group of LP executives and employees will work alongside southern governors in Habitat’s Musicians’ Village as part of the Southern Governors’ Association annual meeting in New Orleans. Conceived by Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis, honorary chairs of Operation Home Delivery, Musicians’ Village will consist of 81 homes for displaced New Orleans musicians.
“We are grateful for LP’s generous donation to help Habitat in our efforts to build houses and hope with families in the Gulf Coast,” said Chris Clarke, senior vice president of Communications for Habitat for Humanity International. “LP’s generous donation not only will provide immediate assistance in our long-term recovery efforts, but will also deliver important and lasting benefits through lower energy costs for homeowners.”
