The following
instructions are to build
the stair rail in place;
this is to say each component
is installed in its final
position. There are numerous
benefits to this installation;
First, discrete parts
are lighter and easier
to handle. Second, it
is far easier to visualize
the angles and spatial
relations of the posts,
balusters and rails. And
last, it is easier to
check your work for plumb
and parallel when in position.
On the
other hand, some installers
like to build the rake
rail as a sub assembly
and then attach it to
the newel posts. Key things
to remember- make sure
the balusters are parallel
to each other and to the
posts. Align balusters
along the centerline of
the rails and make sure
the rails are parallel
to each other.
1.
Check the rail opening
to ensure that the stair
rail newel posts are parallel
and plumb. Check the rise
and run of the stairs
to determine the proper
stair rail angle.
Tip:
Set rail on stairs between
posts to determine both
the angle and length.

The cut outs from the
stair stringers makes
a handy tool for setting
the chop saw angle for
the rails and balusters.
