The following instructions are to build the stair rail in place; this is to say each component is installed in its final position. There are numerous benefits to this installation; First, discrete parts are lighter and easier to handle. Second, it is far easier to visualize the angles and spatial relations of the posts, balusters and rails. And last, it is easier to check your work for plumb and parallel when in position.

On the other hand, some installers like to build the rake rail as a sub assembly and then attach it to the newel posts. Key things to remember- make sure the balusters are parallel to each other and to the posts. Align balusters along the centerline of the rails and make sure the rails are parallel to each other.

1. Check the rail opening to ensure that the stair rail newel posts are parallel and plumb. Check the rise and run of the stairs to determine the proper stair rail angle.

Tip: Set rail on stairs between posts to determine both the angle and length. (Photo 1) Mark both ends. (Photo 2,3) The cut outs from the stair stringers makes a handy tool for setting the chop saw angle for the rails and balusters. (Photo 4)

2. Cut the top and bottom rails at both ends to the determined angle and length. (Photo 5)

3. Install the bottom rail. The relative position of the post to the rise and run of the stairs will determine where the rail fastens to the post. The 3-1/2” rise for horizontal rails may not correspond to rake rails. To determine the proper location for the bottom rail, measure down from the top of the horizontal rail. Transfer to post. Mark post. A spacer board will hold the rail up off the steps and in position. Install the bottom rails to posts by pre drilling and toe screwing. (Photo 6)

4. Determine the number of balusters required by measuring the perpendicular distance between posts and divide by 5 (1-1/2” post and 3-1/2”space). If the distance is no more than 3-1/2” of a whole number divisible by 5, round down. If the distance is greater than 3-1/2” of a whole number, round up. The minimum space between parallel balusters is 3-1/2”. Measure the center point on top and bottom rails. In the case of an even number of balusters, the center point on the rail will be between balusters. Use a stringer cut out measuring 5” to mark the location of the remaining balusters. Use a baluster to mark the front and back edges. Work from the center to the posts to ensure equal spacing. (Photo 7)

5. Measure and cut balusters to fit between rails. (Photo 8) Pre bore hole to toe screw balusters into rails. (Photo 9)

6. Clamp a baluster to the post as a spacer for the top rail. (Photo 10) Place top rail in position. Pre bore and toe screw into post. (Photo 11)

7. Place middle baluster and screw into rails (Photo 12). The baluster must be parallel to post and equidistant to ensure proper alignment of remaining balusters. Pre drill and toe screw top of the balusters into the top rail. (Photo 13)

8. Align the front edge of the next baluster to the marked line of bottom rail. (Photo 14) Screw to rail. Use a piece of 3-1/2” scrap to ensure proper spacing of balusters. (Photo 15) Screw baluster to the top rail.

9. Remove spacer balusters from posts and screw to the top and bottom rails.
